Louis Rees-Zammit was left stunned as he returned to the Principality Stadium for the first time since quitting rugby.

The former Wales wing is now chasing dream of playing in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars but was back in Cardiff over the weekend to cheer on some of his old team-mates as they took on Ireland in the Six Nations.

After a run of hugely disappointing Welsh matches, Rees-Zammit certainly picked a good one to come back and watch as, while they fell to another defeat, the hosts impressed with a hugely encouraging display. Ireland may have won 18-27, but Wales looked a different team to the one that played under Warren Gatland, as temporary boss Matt Sherratt inspired them to play with freedom and expression.

All in all, it made for an enthralling contest and BBC viewers were not left wondering what Rees-Zammit's reaction to it all was, as the camera panned to him and his family in the stands several times over the course of the 80 minutes.

One moment in particular saw the 24-year-old sum up what most Wales fans were thinking as he was left stunned by a decision late on in the game. After Ireland moved six points ahead, debutant Ellis Mee looked to have touched down in the corner in the 73rd minute to score what would have been a decisive try for his side.

However, after a lengthy TMO review, referee Christophe Ridley and his officiating team judged Mee's effort to have fallen just shy of the try line.

The verdict was a big hit to Wales' hopes of earning a miraculous win and Rees-Zammit was left in disbelief as he was caught on camera shouting 'WHAT?' as Ridley revealed his decision.

Another penalty from Sam Prendergast in the 78th minute saw Ireland move further clear, as they inflicted another defeat on Wales to keep their Grand Slam hopes alive.

Nevertheless, Rees-Zammit was treated to an exciting contest on his return to Cardiff and certainly got into the spirit of things. After running around Cardiff's Roath Park on the morning of the match, he popped in to see some of his former team-mates in the changing room before the match and said it was "amazing" to be back.

"Good to see the boys in the changing rooms," he said as he spoke ahead of the match. "I’m looking forward to today, it’s my first game back since I played (for Wales). It’s going to be a good watch and hopefully the boys win.”
